New York City Announces New 'Open Gangway' R211 Subway Cars

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – FEBRUARY 1: (AUDIO OMITTED) People sit and stand in the new R211T "open gangway" subway car on the C line as New York Governor Kathy Hochul announces the rollout of the cars on the C line, running between Washington Heights and East New York, on February 1, 2024 in New York City. The ‘open gangway’ train allow passengers to move freely between cars. They are roomier, which reduces crowding and increases accessibility for passengers pushing strollers or wheelchairs. Due to the lack of open space between vehicles and fewer places to climb up or down, they will also discourage the risky fad or trend of subway surfing. The installation of security cameras is a highly touted measure by Governor Hochul to deter crime, enhance subway safety and increase commuter confidence in the subway system. The press conference was followed by an inaugural ride with Governor Hochul, MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber, NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper, MTA Chief Disability Officer Quemuel Arroyo and Michael Culotta, Federal Transit Administrator (FTA) Regional 2, starting at the 168 St. AC1 station in Washington Heights. The event was held at the 207th Street subway yard in the neighborhood of Washington Heights in upper Manhattan. (Footage by Tomas Abad/Getty Images)
