Jefferson Davis, who was the president of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil war, a war fought over slavery, and the secession of states in the American South, from the Union, is commemorated with a monument, August 20, 2017 in Fairview, Kentucky. Monuments and statues to the confederacy have been removed across the United States in the past several years. The focal point of the memorial is a 351-foot concrete obelisk, which began to be built in 1917, and was finished after WWI in 1924 due to materials rationing. Many confederate monuments were built in the 1920s during the political rise of the Ku Klux Klan, a formidable political group, which is now know for it's racism, white supremacy beliefs, cross burnings, and marches meant to intimidate others.
