UNITED KINGDOM : A lithograph of this illustration was used by John Cooke Bourne (1814-1896) as the frontispiece of his book 'The History and Description of the Great Western Railway', published in 1846. The Gooch 'Firefly' class steam locomotive, Acheron, is shown emerging from the archway of a tunnel between Bath and Bristol. The Great Western Railway (GWR) was built from 1835 to provide a route from Bristol to London, using broad gauge track developed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859). The line opened fully in 1841.
