COATLICUE, DEESSE AZTEQUE DE LA TERRE 1300-1521

COATLICUE, AZTEC goddess of the Earth, stone sculpture dating from between 1300 and 1521. Preserved at Mexico's National Museum of Anthropology (ht. 73cm). From the Nathuatl word "coatl", meaning serpent and "cueitl", skirt, she is the mother-goddess of fertility and the earth. Given the evil powers that emanate from her (probably to inspire terror), one can understand the reaction of the Catholic clergy which was arriving to Mexico in the XVIth century.
